ROUND ROCK, TX. —- A handful of family and friends came together Saturday at St. Philip's United Methodist Church in Round Rock to remember their fallen hero, Sgt. Adam Huckstep-LaPorte.
"2-Step," as his friends called him, was stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia. The 23-year old was preparing for his second deployment, this time to Afghanistan, when he was killed on February 1st; just two days before he was scheduled to leave. A car turned in front of his motorcycle.
Huckstep-LaPorte was buried in the DFW National Cemetery, but the community where he was raised and attended high school, wanted to remember him.
"You sort of feel relief when your soldier comes home, and to have a tragedy like this happen, it shakes you to the core," says family friend and Cedar Park City Councilman Tony Dale. "So it's important that we as a community come out, not only to support the family, but to honor his service."
Also on hand to honor his service were the Austin Patriot Guard riders.
Huckstep-LaPorte enlisted in the army in 2008 and was deployed to Iraq in October of 2009. He received 10 awards, including two Army Achievement Medals and the National Defense Army Service Ribbon.
Dale says the services were hard for all of the family and friends, especially Huckstep-LaPorte's mother, Tracy LaPorte. She started the organization Military Moms of Texas. A group dedicated to helping families of deployed soldiers. -
